Franz Thau 1875-1878

Thau is usually listed as a cooper in the Baltimore City periodicals.  A cooper is a person who makes barrels and kegs.  At some point Thau had his hand in his own bottling probably just prior to joining up with Paul Muhlhauser from 1877-1880 with their Crystal Springs Brewery.

Thau and Mulhauser's Crystal Spring Brewery 1877-1880

This partnership may have formed in 1877 but the only literature documented is for 1880.  Only two known bottles have been documented from this short lived brewery.  In 1883 the brewery is purchased by Thomas Dukehart for $60,000.

Universal Seal and Stopper Company 1903-1904

The Universal Seal & Stopper Company was a lip and closure system from 1903-1904.  It was designed as a competitor to the Crown Cork & Seal.  The design had several parts to seal the bottle and the concept was quickly found to be too complex and timely.  The company did try and successfully pushed this system to at least one glasshouse and several GBS brewery bottles and some non Baltimore bottles were produced.  Universal produced some bottles with their company's name on the base of the bottle and other "Universal Seal" bottles have been found with no embossing.  These could have been a prototype or another glasshouse duplicating their design.
