Christian Hohnberger 1858-1868

Christian ran a small brewing business from his 89 Lee rowhome which was previously the address of John Grasbinder.  Christian was in business for 10 years and had the unfortunate issue that several Baltimoreans had of having his name misspelled.  Stoneware is found as Hohnberger, Honberger and Honsberger.  Imagine commissioning a potter and they spell your name incorrectly on three batches of stoneware

James Holmes' Bottling Cellar

James ran a bottling cellar in 1823-1827 under 127 Baltimore St.  James would have purchased ale, porter, mead, stout etc in bulk and individually bottled for sale.  This is the earliest Baltimore known stoneware beer.

Hoster Brewing Company 1899

In 1899 Hoster Brewing Company ran a bottling house at 217-219 S. Howard St.  Here kegs of beer would have arrived by train from Ohio, the beer siphoned from the keg and bottled for local sale.  The short timeframe of this establishment leaves very few bottles.

By 1901 Hoster is gone and the location is used for wholesale liquor distribution.

Iroquois Brewing Company

Iroquois set up a bottling house at 2120-2126 Madison St in 1903 and in 1904 moved to 359 Guilford Ave (North).  They were successful in that they were in Baltimore for 14 years.  Iroquois is the only known bottling house in Baltimore that very briefly adopted the Columbia Bottling Cap for one of it's bottles quickly changing to the simpler and more cost effective Crown.
