Berger Brewery 1848-1903

The Berger Brewery location started as the Albion Brewery in 1848 changing to The Berger Brewery in 1894.  The brewery was located at 1422 Belvidere Ave in North Baltimore.  Note the add from the brewery to the left notes the distribution of it's beers in bottles.  These included the Pale Beer and Extra Brewed Standard flavors.  Bernhard Berger passes away in 1894 and his son John B takes over until the Brewery is sold to the Maryland Brewing Company in 1899.  The Maryland Brewing Company choose to close the brewery as it was 1 or 16 local breweries that were purchased and the Berger location was not needed to support demand.

A view from the 1890 Sandborn map noting the location of the brewery and the local stream where the brewery most likely dumped all its waste products.  A typical function of most creeks and streams flowing next to breweries.

John Berger & Co Fells Point White Beer Brewery 1866-1888

Berger & Company's White Beer Brewery was in Fell's Point at 22 Thames until 1878 and then at 317 S. Bond St.

A view from the 1890 Sandborn map noting the location of the brewery noting the kettle for brewing and the ice house for cooling.  Wiess Beer was almost always bottled in stoneware but John also used one glass version.  John passes away in 1883 but his wife Elizabeth continues to run the brewery until 1888.  Glass and stoneware bottles from this brewery are very limited.

Paul Berta's Saloon 1888-1907

Berta is listed in Baltimore City Directories as a Saloon Proprietor in 1888-1892 and later in 1901 as Bottler.  His saloon was located at 1210 Bank St.  Berta was not a brewer and it appears to have had these bottles made for his saloon patrons to order or take a beer to-go.  Just like other bottles at the time, the cost of the bottle far outweighed the beer within.  Very few of these bottles have been documented.

A view from the 1890 Sandborn map noting the location of Berta' Saloon.
