Lewis Kalling 1863-1903

Kalling was a prolific bottler operating at 18 Water St before moving to 1879 to the corner of South and Water.  Kalling was a bottler for several local breweries and for Phillip's Best Milwaukee and Bohemian Lager and Wm. Massey & Company's Philadelphia X, XX and XXX Ales.  While this was most likely a productive contract only one version of a Kalling beer bottle is readily accessible.  The other is rather difficult to obtain as few have been documented.

Need to find the 16 South St map from 1901

Bernard Keily 1867-1873

Bernard Keily was a clerk at his family's grocery store at 405 W. Pratt St and must have operated a small brewery and most likely sold those beverages at the store.

Charles Kern's Saloon 1880-1891

Kern can be found in the Baltimore City Directories from 1880-1991 at Fremont Ave operating  saloon.  Kern's bottles were most likely commissioned to enable patrons to take a beer home with them.  Kern was not a brewer and most likely just filled up the bottle with beers that were on tap in the saloon.  His bottles are extremely rare.

A view from 1890.  Currently the saloon and surrounding buildings have been razed with an ugly apartment complex now in the location.

#1180

Horizontal oval slugplate, applied lip with no glasshouse identified.

Michael Herman Kohler's Bottling House 1879-1901

Koehler was a prolific bottler of beer, soda water and other local beverages that he would buy in bulk and then bottle under his name to sell.  His beer bottle is one of only a few Baltimore bottles that actually states "LAGER BEER".

A view from 1890.

#1180

Private mold, applied lip with no glasshouse identified.  Rear embossed "LAGER BEER"
