J. L. Metcalf 1851

Metcalf is listed as a grocery in 1851 and must have operated a small brewery, selling his beverages at his store at 2 Josephine St.  Even when attempting various spellings for Metcalf, he is not found before or after 1851 in any Baltimore City periodicals.

Alex Von Mitzel's Bottling House Pre 1866-1889

Mitzel originally had a bottling house at 8 S. Charles St, with Hartung and in 1868 at Post Office and Second ave up to 1869 however no bottles were embossed.  Mitzel is then found in 1878 forward as one of several local bottlers that were contracted to bottle for Anheuser Busch and was the Sole Agent in 1886.  Mitzel's bottling house grew and eventually took over both 9 & 11 S. Eutaw Street.  10 years before bottling Mitzel was a Veteran of the Civil War as a Union soldier.  Mitzel dies in 1887 but the bottling house carries on until 1889.

In 1890 9 S. Eutaw St is a Saloon and the 11 S. Eutaw address is noted as storage, the rear of 11 and 13 listed as Beer Bottling with an ice house which no doubt helped keep the beer cooled.
