John Spahn/Spann 1864-1882

Spahn appears throughout Baltimore's periodicals but always as a brush salesman and then he appears to be running his own brush company with other employees at 212 S Ann St just one door down from his home address of 210 S Ann St.  Spahn conducted a brewery/bottling venture for what is believed a very short time as only one or two stoneware pieces have been found.

Spring Garden Brewery 1864-1891

Bauernschmidt & Marr's Spring Garden Brewery located at the foot of Ridgely St. was very successful during it's years of operation.  Bottles from this brewery were not manufactured until 1887-1891.  In 1891 Bauernschmidt & Marr sold the brewery to the Baltimore Limited Brewing Company which continued operation until 1899 when they closed.

At times, Breweries would also attach labels to help identify the brewery and the beer to have them stand out in a crowd.  As each bottle was thoroughly washed between uses, labels almost never survived unless the bottle was discarded in a safe place.  Examples are generally found on bottles left in basements, attics and in the walls.

Jordan Stabler's Retail Grocery 1892

Stabler was in the wholesale and retail grocery business but was also a Director at the Crown, Cork and Seal Company in 1892, the first year of the Crown top.  All three examples of this bottle are from the same slugplate.  While most likely not a brewer, he appears to have bottled some beer for sale at this store or these were just promotional bottles congratulating him on his Director position.

A billhead from Stabler's grocery store with a physical address of 701-705 Madison Ave.
